The 5th IFAR Summit 2014 was held in Zhuhai from 8 to 12 November, 2014, during the occasion of the China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition (Airshow China). The Chinese Aeronautical Establishment (CAE) hosted senior level representatives from IFAR participating organizations. During the Summit, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) of South Africa, and the Centre for Excellence and Innovation in the Automotive Industry (CEIIA) of Portugal were accepted as new members bringing the total number of participating nations to 26.

The purpose of IFAR is to connect research organizations worldwide to enable the information exchange in the field of aviation research with the objective to identify areas of mutually beneficial collaboration. In addition to its scientific and technical expertise, IFAR also promotes exchanges on education and of young aviation scientists and engineers. During the Summit, IFAR members discussed their technical collaboration in several areas of importance to the global civil aviation community, including the impact of aviation on the environment, alternative fuels for aviation, global approach to air traffic management research, supersonic aircraft, and wind tunnel testing. The Summit highlighted the results achieved by the alternative aviation fuels working group and prospects for future mutually beneficial collaborative work in the areas of noise and the reducing the adverse impact of weather. The members also participated in the IFAR Café session, which provided an opportunity to discuss global challenges and opportunities facing aviation, and reaffirmed the importance of global cooperation to achieve common objectives.

A web-based communication and database platform, IFARLink (www.ifarlink.aero), which has been established for exclusive use by IFAR members was endorsed as a mechanism to support the exchange of information and further improvement of IFAR technology databases. This unique tool is facilitating the initiative on exchange of education and promotion of young IFAR scientists and engineers where concrete activities are being defined and dialogues are taking place through the use of virtual conferencing. IFAR members also supported the work of young researchers that met during the Summit, in which twelve participants from China, Germany, Japan, Russia, and South Korea exchanged views on the future of Aviation to contribute to IFAR´s future vision.

IFAR members participated in and supported actively the 7th China International Aviation & Aerospace Forum, which was presented by State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence, PRC (under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology), and co-organized by the Zhuhai Municipal People’s Government; China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation; China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation; Aviation Industry Corporation of China; Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China Ltd.; Chinese Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics; and Chinese Society of Astronautics. The forum themes focused on the “Participation, Cooperation & Contribution: Future of Aviation and Aerospace Industry,” and “Aviation Change the Life.” The forum was attended by more than 400 guests including representatives from the Chinese government, industry, and academia leaders. Li Yuanchao, Vice President of the People´s Republic of China invited the IFAR leaders to update him on IFAR activities, and discuss the importance of global collaboration to meet the future aviation challenges of the future. This theme was also discussed at a meeting of IFAR members with Lin Zuoming, President of Aviation Industry Cooperation of China (AVIC).

 

The outcomes of this Summit were summarized in a declaration.
